Allegro: The Tiny Astronaut Experiments
An ongoing creative adventure in character and media.
Proportion and Medium
It began with a doodle and I found myself using the astronaut as a vessel for experimenting with other media. As I did, the proportions were refined and Allegro was born.
Some of the materials used: Snow, Watercolor Pencil, Gel Pen, and Copic Marker.
Emotion
Since Allegro doesn't have a face, I had to discover how to convey some level of emotion with his visor and helmet.
Stance and Storyboards
The helmet visor itself was difficult to convey a clear emotion with. The addition of his body provided the missing piece to give Allegro some character through stance.
From poses I moved on to storyboarding motion sequences and exploring the idea of a tiny astronaut exploring our human world.
Hand Drawn Animation
I decided to attempt a hand drawn animation of Allegro. A simple motion sequence, but an invaluable learning experience in understanding my character and how he moves. As if I didn't appreciate the classic Disney movies already.
The result of these little guys is in the video below.
A hand drawn animation using tracing paper, fineliner, colored pencil, and Photoshop's timeline feature.
Digital Animation
A short character animation using Adobe Illustrator and After Effects.
Every Project Needs a Logo
A bold and bright logo to match the tiny little character it belongs to. Of the two variations I was developing, I selected this one because it was more of a logo and less of a character.
As far as color goes: started with the more subdued orange and felt it wouldn't represent the vibrancy I want the character to have. Hence, the intense red-orange.
Check back to see this collection of experiments evolve.
Next up is a short comic strip or story depending on how much time I have.
